Research Areas
All of my research is related to schizophrenia. I am pursuing projects in two major areas. First, in a project based in Barcelona, and in collaborations with investigators who work with large, population-based datasets from Finland, we are investigating the medical problems abnormalities associated with schizophrenia. The focus is on medical problems that may be inherent to the disease itself, rather than such factors as poor health habits and medication side effects. As an outgrowth of this work, we have started to investigate adult, circulating stem cells. One of the hypotheses we are testing in this area is that schizophrenia is a syndrome of accelerated aging. Second, I have a longstanding interest in negative symptoms, and in the group of patients with "deficit schizophrenia" who have enduring, idiopathic negative symptoms. This group appears to have a disease separate from other forms of schizophrenia. Our current focus is on the differential genetics of this group.

Clinical Interests
Psychotic disorders.
