Teaching Areas
* Hematological disorders such as sickle cell disease and thalassemias; * Intracellular signaling pathways in hematopoietic stem cells; * Transcriptional and translational regulation of gene expression in hematopoietic cells * Molecular actions of growth factors and cytokines

Research Areas
Our laboratory has been working on mechanisms responsible for gene expression in erythroid-lineage cells. We have currently been focusing on the following three projects. First project is to study the molecular mechanism by which expression of the human beta-like globin genes is regulated during development, where we will characterize cis-acting elements as well as transcription factors. Second project focuses on identifying intracellular signaling pathways that are involved in the regulation of fetal globin gene expression; recently, we are studying the roles of cyclic nucleotides. Third project is to develop new therapeutics for anemic disorders such as sickle cell disease and beta-thalassemia; specifically, we are interested in the roles of phosphodiesterases in regulating expression of beta-like globin genes.

Clinical Interests
Anemic disorders such as sickle cell disease and thalassemias Molecular basis of leukemia Gene therapy for hematological disorders
