Teaching Areas Dr. Wataha teaches in the Dental Materials courses, preclinical and clinical dental courses in Occlusion, Oral Anesthesia, and Operative Dentistry, and Biochemistry courses at the School of Dentistry. He also teaches dental materials topics to residents and postdoctoral students, and is coordinator of the Biocompatibility Research Group.
Research Areas Dr. Wataha¿s research interests center around the interactions between materials and biological tissues, especially as they relate to the mechanisms by which materials elicit desirable or undesirable biological responses. He is also interested in the use and development of in vitro systems to predict and model tissue-material interactions. His work has progressed from a simplistic understanding of the release of metals from dental alloys to a much more sophisticated picture of the long-term biological effects of metals released from alloys. He has begun to investigate, with several collaborators at MCG, the release of resin components from polymers and ceramics and their biological consequences.
