Teaching Areas My graduate teaching areas include research methods, research seminars, professional issues, health care delivery systems, adult education and instructional methods. My undergraduate teaching includes respiratory care seminar, cardiopulmonary pathophysiology, and problem-based learning courses. My teaching focuses on cardiopulmonary care: acute and long-term disease management, patient assessment and clinical decision making; and, professional skills development.
Research Areas My current clinical research focuses on asthma management, using a multidisciplinary approach toward better understanding of the morbidity, patient perception of airway obstruction, the role of indoor allergens, and the effects of asthma on quality of life in patients and their families (see http:\www.QLMed.org/AMA and atsqol.org). Additional interests include the use of outcomes research to improve patient education, patient compliance, and health care delivery for the control asthma and improved quality of life.In addition to patient education, my educational research focuses on methods to improve professional training using problem-based learning (PBL), distance education and experiential learning, with particular emphasis on promoting critical thinking, problem solving and clinical decision making.
Clinical Interests My clinical interests include asthma management, sleep disordered breathing, noise exposure in health care settings, patient education and assessment of quality of life. I am credentialed as a registered respiratory therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care, a Fellow of the American Association for Respiratory Care (FAARC), and a licensed respiratory care professional (RCP) by the Georgia Composite State Board of Medical Examiners, Advisory Committee for Respiratory Care.
